Coming from Sporting Braga where he started to play football, João Carlos came to Sporting Lisbon still as a U12. He went through all the junior sides in the Sporting Football Academy as a creative midfielder, in charge of organising and building the transition to the attack.
He was U15 Portuguese national champion, and he quickly made his way to the national team, representing Portugal in all the levels from U16 to U19.
An injury kept him away from competing for some time during the 2010/11 season, but in the next season he came back with a revenge, becoming an undisputed first team player in the Sporting Lisbon junior side coached by Sá Pinto, and he started to be frequently called by the senior team coach Domingos Paciência to train with the senior team. He was called for the first time for a Europe League against FC Zurich that took place in Lisbon the 1st December 2011, where he was an unused sub. The same happened two weeks later against Lazio, in Rome.
His good performance in the NextGen Series led to the interesse of major foreign clubs, and the English press announced that Liverpool would be interested in the young midfielder. This was confirmed in January 2012, when João Carlos did not yet have a professional contract with Sporting so he would become free at the end of the season. The amount involved in the transfer was not made public, but it was estimated to be around one million euros.
