Sunil Chhetri started his football career for school teams and then for his local club, City Club. Renowned for his work rate, ball control and ability to strike, early attracted attention not only nationally but also abroad. In 2006/07 season has even won the award for Best Player of the Year and Best Forward at NFL in India (National Football League before it became known as I-League) and in 2010/11 was once again considered Best Player of the Year.
In January 25, 2009 Sunil arrived England to start a trial for Coventry City, however, four days after it was announced his discharge. In August 2009 a new setback for Sunil's career, when he saw the three-year contract with Queens Park Rangers be revoked by imposition of the British government.
Chhetri joined the american team Kansas City Wizards in March 24, 2010, becoming the first Indian player to represent a Major League Soccer club. However, Sunil played only on two occasions which earned him a dismissal and return to India.
International Indian captain of his national team scoring 33 goals in 58 games as of June 10, 2012, and totalising 58 goals in 114 domestic appearances, Sunil Chhetri joined Sporting Clube de Portugal on July 4, 2012, integrating the B Squad, in what was considered by the board an "historical day" as Sporting Clube de Portugal celebrated the official launch of its brand in the Indian market.
