A novidade da Equipa B
A época de 2000/01 ficou marcada pela novidade das Equipas BB, que foram acopladas aos na altura denominados Campeonatos Nacionais da 2ª Divisão B, que eram o terceiro escalão do futebol português.
O Sporting naturalmente que embarcou neste novo projecto, apresentando uma equipa maioritariamente formada por seniores de 1º e 2º ano, aos quais se juntaram alguns juniores, havendo entre estes que destacar nomes como Carlos Martins, Ricardo Quaresma, Luís Lourenço e Santamaria, sem esquecer o marroquino Houssine Kharja, todos regularmente utilizados.
Curiosamente de entre os mais velhos, apenas Chiquinho viria a jogar pela equipa principal, e mesmo assim foi só de passagem.
A adaptação ao futebol muito físico e mais adulto da 2ª B não foi fácil e, o Sporting sofreu até ao fim para garantir a manutenção, terminando num modesto 14º lugar.
